Nepal’s Coca Cola bottler joins forces with UK Aid to promote women entrepreneurs

We are delighted that the authorised Coca Cola bottler in Nepal, Bottlers Nepal Limited, has joined Unilever, Prabhu Bank and UK Aid-funded RAP3 CONNECT, which is delivered by IMC, to help local women become micro-entrepreneurs.

The authorised Coca Cola bottler in Nepal, Bottlers Nepal Limited, has joined Unilever, Prabhu Bank and UK Aid-funded RAP3 CONNECT, which is delivered by IMC, to help local women become micro-entrepreneurs.

Since 2016, CONNECT has been selecting high-potential women in the Mid and Far West of Nepal, also known as the Hamri Didis (in Nepali, ‘our sisters’).

They have been trained and appointed by CONNECT’s business partner Unilever as rural sales agents to distribute health and sanitation products to remote communities. Meanwhile, Prabhu Bank has lent them start-up capital to help them launch their businesses.

I am extremely pleased about our collaboration with IMC Worldwide, through which we have been  able  to support  in  building  capability of  400  women  from  the  ‘Hamri  Didi’  network.

The addition to the partnership of Bottlers Nepal Limited, one of Nepal’s largest businesses, means that the Hamri Didis, who are now more than 400 spread across six districts, can also distribute Coca Cola products. Moreover, they have received sales and financial literacy training as well as guidance on business registration.

This initiative is in line with the 5by20 programme, Coca Cola’s global commitment to the economic empowerment of 5 million women entrepreneurs across the company’s value chain by 2020. Meanwhile, Bottlers Nepal has been imparting the ‘Shopkeepers Training And Resources (STAR)’ training to women retailers since 2013 to teach them how to incorporate better sales strategies into their business models.

‘We continue with our aim of providing hope and support to the female retailers in Nepal, that their businesses can be profitable, no matter the size. I am extremely pleased about our collaboration with IMC Worldwide, through which we have  been  able  to support  in  building  capability of  400  women  from  the  Hamri  Didi network, whose selling  and  merchandising  skills  have  been  enhanced  to  sell  multiple  products  including  ours’, says Rajnish Sharma, the Country Commercial Manager of Bottlers Nepal. ‘We  are looking forward to being a part of the journey these independent women entrepreneurs are courageously commencing.’ 

Thanks to the Hamri Didi initiative, rural communities can buy products, while CONNECT’s business partners can reach last-mile markets.
